Billsey suckers himself because Billy boy is a similar flavor of Christian, and therefore Billsey thinks he is a good man maligned by evil people. As with many evangelicals, Billsey believes that faith is the source of good behavior. A major theme in the evangelical understanding of sin is that sinners are those who 'listen to Satan' -- that is, bad behavior is caused by ignoring God and listening to the lies of Satan. Rather than viewing moral behavior as being founded in one's character, they view it as a consequence of whether one listens to the devil or God. Billsey has certainly deeply integrated this world view, and is therefore bound to experience cognitive dissonance every time someone suggests that McEwen's belief does not imply that he is a good man.
Con men often take advantage of this impulse to trust those we identify with. It does work especially well on certain kinds of extreme religious groups for the reasons laid out above, but it does well enough just based on tribal identification. Bernie Madoff worked it quite well, in fact. He is a Jew; so were most of his victims. I've read many stories from his victims about how they met him through Jewish social connections, and ignored warning signs because (without ever consciously thinking about it like this, mind) how could a fellow Jew (often with strong friend or family connections to the victims) be ripping the rest of us off?
