Electronics have never been so cheap, especially compared to everything else. The average family could buy a moderately sized LCD TV, middle-end laptop or netbook, or smartphone every month if they decided not to buy food and ordinary groceries and starve for a few weeks. What is it you are actually gaining by going for the used computers, unless someone is handing them to you for free? And it has to end up in landfill anyway, no matter what; if you were environmentally conscious it would be better not to use a computer at all, especially an old energy-sucking desktop with no doubt a CRT screen connected to it.
