Looking for NAS

Hi all.

I'm in the market for a NAS, as my Mini-ITX Kubuntu server died following a power cut. I even had a power strip with surge protector, but hadn't started using it yet..

Anyway- I'm in quite a rush to buy a replacement fileserver and since I've always had minor Linux issues, prefer a NAS solution rather than another server. It's only used for files anyway.

Main criteria:

- looking to spend £300 max
- must have 2 drives/bays (RAID)
- must have decent folder level security
- must have decent remote access ie. secure
- preferably from a decent manufacturer with a solid warranty

These criteria seem do-able, but I'd also like these:

- would like to have a built-in email server
- would like on-board Bluetooth (drop files straight into a set folder)

I've seen various units from LaCie, Buffalo and QNAP which fit some criteria. QNAP may actually have a drive which does it all, but who are they? Does anyone have any experience with them?

I'm open to any suggestions, need something I can get ordered in the next day or two max.

Thanks in advance.

Nabs..

Not sure about Bluetooth but Synology, QNAP and Thecaus are the top of the line at the moment
in the smallbusiness and enduser market. I have a Synology DS409 and the software is pretty nice but they still have potential to do better in software/hardware(far less standby power, WakeOnLan, support for USB DVB cards, quickslots).

I like Thecus, however, every unit we used, and we had quite a few, died after a year or so.

http://www.synology.com/

They have everything you need, and more.

I have two NAS's made by them, a 107 and a 107+ (The first digit in the model label is how many drive bays it has, and the two last digits is the year it was released). I am very happy with them. The software, Disk Station Manager, is frequently updated and new features are added with each update.

Synology NAS systems offers everything you need (what you mentioned above), except perhaps maybe bluetooth. *But* they have a USB connector on the front and a "copy" button, which copies the contents of any USB mass storage device (such as your mobile phone when connected by USB?) to a pre-defined folder at the press of the button. So if it's acceptable for you to connect a cable and press a button, then you have a similar feature.

I've never had a problem with anything from LaCie, but they're probably too generalized to be the company to satisfy you in this case (they do a lot of drive stuff, but I also have a LaCie monitor in front of me—a 22inch CRT that goes up to 2048x1536 and has a built in USB hub and dual VGA inputs).

I've never had a Buffalo NAS, but some of the IT folks at work swear by them (and claim that Buffalo is the top of the line, YMMV).

Synology, QNAP and Thecaus/Thecus I have never heard of, so I can't say.

Personally, I have an off-brand NAS on which the only visible branding is "Power Up". It is on ALL the time, and I rarely have any problems with it. That said, I must also add that the instructions look like the product of an "English as a fifteenth language" course. Once you get through that, however, it just works.

By the way, Bluetooth is not a drive brand. It is a wireless technology.

I have a QNAP TS-409 Pro and I'm quite happy with the features, product quality etc. I also have good experiences dealing with their support.

I'm for QNap too, although there are some media players (!) on the market that also double as NAS devices.

But bluetooth? No. None support that. Let's face it, transferring a 700 MB file at 4 K/s isn't so much fun.

Hi guys.

Thanks for all the info.

I came very close to a QNAP, but the model I was after was about £380 without drives. Would have be pushing £475 with 2 500GB units fitted. Was very tempted, but listened to my better judgement in the end.

Went for a Synology DS209. Came in at £290 with 2 Seagate Barracudas.

As mentioned above, it does have a solid feature set and the software looks good. Has everything I was after, even the mail server.

No Bluetooth for now, but who knows? They may yet add it in a future update. I wanted it to quickly/easily upload snaps taken with my mobile. My current laptop doesn't have BT, so it would have been handy.

The only thing I am missing from the QNAP is Wake on LAN, which would have been nice.

Set up was a breeze, it's now running RAID 1 without any issues.

Only remaining problem is to get the data off the Kubuntu drive and onto the NAS. The problem is that although you can transfer external data via USB (through a caddy in this case), that method only works with FAT32. The Linux drive is EXT3.

Remember good old Workbench when you could drop a few new libraries and handlers and you could suddenly read Mac, FAT32 or whatever FS you wanted??

I will either look for some sort of EXT3 FS reader for XP, or just run a Kubuntu Live CD on my laptop and push the data that way.

Any other suggestions will be considered!

Thanks to all who replied. Nice that you can still come to Moobunny and get a decent technical response.

Atheist finds this feature very useful too.

Why not transfer them over the LAN via kubuntu?
