What the HELL is Wrong With Vista????

I was asked to install an anti-virus program on a friend's computer, and they forgot to give me the password.

So, the screen waiting for the password is up, and I can't get in, and there's only one user account..... and the GOD DAMN HARD DRIVE LIGHT is flicking on and off once or twice a second!!!!!!!!!!

What is this PIECE OF USELESS SHIT "OPERATING SYSTEM" DOING THAT IT NEEDS TO RUN OFF OF THE HARD DRIVE WHEN A USER ISN'T EVEN "USING" THE PIECE OF GARBAGE "OS"????????? IS THERE REALLY THAT MUCH RAM BEING USED THAT IT NEEDS TO BE USING SWAP SPACE ON THE HARD DRIVE OR SOMETHING?????????????? MUST _EVERYTHING_ MICRO-SHAFTERS MAKE BE A PIECE OF ENORMOUS EXCREMENT????????

Your friend must be a complete spacker if (s)he is (a) not already running an AV suite, and (b) asked you to do it for him/her.

Loading background processes, possibly defragging whilst the system idles. If the frequency is as you describe it my money would be on the latter.

Yes, how dare it go about standard housekeeping duties whilst the user isn't logged in!!!

That would be "or something", however if your friend is as hopeless as you are, it's possible that he has Vista running on a system vastly underpowered for the task.

Vista, for all its flaws, isn't actually that bad of an OS. It's no Win2k pro, but then again nothing they've done since is either. That you don't understand computers however is not Microsoft's fault.

Yes, she bought the computer and brought it home and they don't come standard with an anti-virus program, what does she know of necessary things like this?

The computer has been on for 2 hours, I'm still trying to get a hold of her for the password, and it's still flicking the light on and off, and it is randomly doing this, not a constant blinking, like "I'm on", kind of thing.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a vendor that doesn't supply AV, usually a demo of Norton.

NOD32, kasperski, Avast in that order of effectiveness.

And quite frankly, if she doesn't know about the necessity of running things like AV, like firewalls, like anti malware (hell even windows defender isn't bad for that and is built in) then they have no business going online. It's idiots like these that enable botnets to thrive. Well, those and fuckwits who think they know what they're doing but fail spectacularly. Oh and those who run pirated copies of unknown origin.

With the internet becoming ever more vital to the economy, the dangers associated with not locking down your system increases steadily. Personally I think something akin to the ECDL should be made mandatory before one can even own a computer.

Harsh? Yes, but with good reason.

General housekeeping, defragging, updating the index (assuming indexing is still on). Possibly even Defender having a nosey.

She has an anti-virus program going,"Personal Antivirus".

Also has "Norton Internet Security", however, this is inactive, as it hasn't been renewed.

Thank you.

Apparently, I was under "classic view" and there it's called "programs and features", heh, how do I tell the difference between a "program" and a "feature".

Lots of stuff came with this Hewlett Packard, if I uninstall any of it, it'll be gone forever, guess I should leave it all alone.

I can't work out what is funnier. The fact you failed to ask for the passwords, or the fact that this person lets you near their computer, on a presumption, god alone knows why, a premise that you are fit for such a task.

I thought you were the most stupid cretinous person on the planet, and now you've found someone dumber than you. Congratulations.

Honestly, Vista really ain't that bad IF you have decent hardware meaning decent drivers. I've been running my own homebuilt system for over a year now and it's the best computer I've ever owned. I doubt I'll even bother upgrading to 7.

If you have a system powerful enough to cope with Vista's imitations of sprinting through treacle, then in many ways, 7 does nothing to address fundamental issues. In the main, the core problems of Vista are the same in 7, and the things that did not work, also tend to still not run.
On systems where Vista runs badly, they offer a valid reason to upgrade, as some parts of 7 do address that.

Some items that Vista has, actually get removed in 7, and are not coming back.

The Vista family remains a dire OS, and only the generic windows market will drag it out of the shit. XP can't go on forever, and most 3rd parties are moving to 7 and getting on with it as its clear that is the only viable future path. None of which changes the Vista family.

You mean my teeth won't be able to run the latest games??? Or do you mean plaque will decay my windows install?

I figure if people are still using XP then Vista will have support for the lifetime of this machine. Call Microsoft any amount of rude names you like, but their legacy OS support is damn good.

It depends upon how you examine this.
To put this in a nutshell, their legacy support was so poor from XP to Vista, that only a low percentage of the base found it acceptable. The non-installed base are nominally affected less so, but most installed bases simply refused to move.

Vista support (and by that, you may as well include 7), is so poor that its only actually being fixed by vendors coming through with replacement products, drivers and software, and patches. 7 gains several years of vendor and developer build up, of which Vista had very little, and that more than anything else will be the tipping point for 7.

The very lame XP virtual machine is to all intents and purposes a complete bodge to try and bridge a yawning gap, and the fact much of the Intel infrastructure works against this is of no help at all.

The last thing anyone actually needed was some more overhanging XP garbage having to be run because the new OS can't support the old 'lagacy'. Anyone using it is going to be left patching and bodging and fudging and the rest. What a cludge.

I mean you might think you're getting away with it, but sooner or later you'll realise it was a bad idea from the start.

This is true but I expected this and above all else I made sure every piece of hardware I bought was compatible with x64 Vista. Since I'm on SP2 and it's completely solid with the drivers I have, never crashes etc. I think I'm gonna be good with it going forward. Software compatibility is better than I expected, for applications in particular, but I'm not too worried if older games don't run. It's nice if someone patches them, if not then tough.

Hey, I totally agree. I got inconveniently stuck between the end of XP product registration and the release of 7 so it wasn't really my choice to go Vista but I needed a new computer since the Mac died. However, I find it fairly acceptable for home use, even if the underlying technologies are fairly crappy. It doesn't crash or frustrate me and that's good enough for me.

If you have little historical baggage in terms of legacy, to be fair, the MS products will be fine, assuming you supply the right level of base hardware. From what you say, it should be fine in your case.

Yep. Pentium Dual Core, PC6400 memory, ATI HD4850 and a bargain bucket Gigabyte mobo. Hardly cutting edge ('cept for the video card which is not only overkill but bloody noisy) but certainly good enough for Vista. Nice cheap build.

Yes, but you can ignore most of the above. Anything half decent allied up with 'enough ram' (read 4GB) is enough for Vista, especially if gaming is not in your primary focus.

ATI are beating the shit out of Nvidia, The new 5 series are the best cards on the market, with really decent power specs. The 4 series are power hungry, noisy, but good performers. You should get a new 5 series model as soon as the opportunity arrises.

I wouldn't worry about the HP shovelware too much as your friend is better off without it. The only reason she asked you to to install anti-virus is because the free trial version of Norton ran out. There should be a recovery partition set up which has all the crap ready to re-install with Vista, back this up to DVD if you're really concerned about it.
