I reckon I'd get a Q6600 in there if I was going to spend the money, rather than update the video card. Anyway, I'm skint :) Glad I got an ATI card, though. Not just for the power but the audio out through HDMI was amazing when I had my rig hooked up to the TV. No SPDIF passthrough nonsense. Or maybe Nvidia have fixed that now.

What's bizarro is, when I double click on a photo in Vista, whatever the display program is, it opens ANOTHER window with the next photo I double click on, AND, I CAN NOT drag and drop another photo into the file display program!!!! It just doesn't replace the current picture with the dragged/dropped photo!

The semi-transparent thing just doesn't do it for me, it's hard to see the top of the current program, so I can grab and slide it across the screen to another location.

Oh, and that hard drive just keeps flicking on and off..... what a TERRIBLE OS, and, I gave it a chance, and I'm _not_ surprised to be let down as much as I am....

In addition to that, I know understand that Apple Mac ad about EVERY time I start a program, it asks if it's ok to, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!

Okay, what's with the 3 requests to delete something, and THEN the screen goes COMPLETELY BLACK for 1 second or so, and the files are deleted.

Oh, that's if it's a directory with files in it, there's a difference if it's only one file, then there are only TWO "I accept" clickings, and the screen still goes entirely black, like there's a power failure that ensues due to erasing a 6 K file.

You will need to press the windows button and type 'MSCONFIG' into the search box. Move to 'startup' tab.

Vista (+Mac (what a snow jobs)) and most "modern"(sic) OSs are reduced to:

A D: On display? I had to go down to the cellar.
Official: that's the display department.
A D: with a torch!
O: the lights were probably out.
A D: so were the stairs.
O: but you did see the notice, didn't you?
A D: Oh yes, it was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign outside the door saying "beware of the LEOPARD!" Ever thought about going into advertising?

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP

Win-snooze xp needs:
1.5 Gigs
1.8 for SP2
900 MB for SP3
equaling 4.2 Gigs, this _however_ over looks the fact that win-dos HAS TO HAVE the virtual mem running, and that is ~5 more Gigs of HD space when you have 3 GBs of ram. And, if you use sleep mode, that's ANOTHER 3 Gigs that's copied over to the HD.... Is the virtual ram copied over too, WHO KNOWS?????

This is sad and most pathetic.

AOS is CLEARLY, LIGHT YEARS AHEAD of this atrocious SHIT!

Prove it. How much HD space does it take AOS to do all the same things, have all the same drivers, etc.

Do you have any idea how many drivers windows comes with?

Well, for starters, you are NOT FORCED TO use virtual ram. This uses 5 GIGABYTES of hard drive space ALONE on win-dos.

> How much HD space does it take AOS to do all the same things,

There's no sleep mode, so you don't need extra HD space (up to 3.4 gigabytes)....

> have all the same drivers, etc.

Amiga OS is lacking many drivers, however, I'm sure that if AOS _did_ have all the drivers, they probably wouldn't ALL be there, using up umpteen megabytes of space. As well, there aren't about a BILLION files as part of the OS. This uses up ridiculous amounts of HD space, if the cluster size is big and the files are minuscule.

Virtual Ram and Swap Files are two separate things. If you want to use a Swap File, you must have enough space on your drive to, you know, actually swap. If you have 3 Gigs of memory but don't have 5 Gigs free on your hard drive, your hard drive is full.

For the comparison, you DO need the extra HD space: The question was "How much HD space does it take AOS to do all the same things?"

Maybe you should compare AOS to Win95.

Why not? they need to be stored somewhere. Might as well just keep them on the Hard Drive. The whole point of plug and play is ease of use. Why would you want to have to find a DVD and respond to a prompt every time you plug in a device? Besides, storage is cheap. 5 gigs is nothing, I have a necklace I wear that holds 16 gigs. 5 Gigs isn't even todays equivalent of a "floppy"

Hardly takes up any space. the whole OS with all the drivers doesn't even fill my iPod, or my USB necklace, much less my desktop computers HDD.

OS4 uses Virtual Ram. Swap space is a different thing however as someone else already pointed out.

Exactamundo. And unlike AmigaOS, which needs specific versions for specific models, that one copy of Windows XP will install just as easily on a 14 year old PC (assuming disk and ram are of the correct quantity) as it will on the latest and greatest.

THIS. It isn't 1985 anymore, or 1994 either. Yes, modern OS's use more HD space than older ones. But consider this: you can go out and buy a 1.5 TERABYTE HD these days for a cost roughly comparable to what a 300 MB drive cost when the A4000 was new.

I can't be bothered to do the math just now, but I expect a modern OS uses a lot smaller percentage of a modern HD than previous - even with the 'large cluster - small file' factor.

Yes, it sure was great you could run an A500 with a full OS from a floppy with 512K of memory. In 1985. Those days are gone, and they're not coming back. Deal with it. Or stick with your legacy hardware and stop complaining.

As far as I'm concerned (from eXPerience), win-dross IS IN beta _still_, wretched piece of shit that it is. And that's after 8 years of "enhancement".

Stop complaining?

5 BILLION+++ dollars spent on coding, and that's the BEST they could do?

Win-dross is an atrocity... and for 5 billion, you'd figure it could have been entirely in assmbler, too. i.e. _FAST_.
