Buying a new computer is akin to buying a new car : a waste of money and resources.

that depends on what you do with them.
Today is the final day of this 'deal', and for a 64 bit laptop with 8 CPU cores, decent gfx, decent disk, and a low price, whatever you might think, this_is_a_bargain.

Your Windows 98 laptop won't live forever Gregg. And getting a second hand computer is a bit dodgy. Personally, I prefer to supply the pubic hair to the keyboard and the dirty smudgeprints to the buttons myself, and not have it done for me.

That said, getting a desktop is silly these days too. Use an xbox for gaming, laptop or netbook for mobility, and a nettop* for a fixed in place computer.

(* I didn't coin the name. Don't blame me. Regardless of the silly name, a computer using 40 watts rather than 800 watts doing basic tasks sounds good to me.)

I prefer m,y current rigging,

2 x netbooks, one *nix/other, one windows
1 x 15 inch lappie for general work
1 x half decent desk for much crunchie work
1 x ESXi hosted system for various

Changing the 15" for the 17" is workable, and that 17" is 90watt psu and very decent specs. If I need true portable, the two netbooks work fine.

That 17" matches the desktop, and could replace it, cutting systems overall by 1.

i7 has EIGHT cores????

I like this listed feature. "English Documentation", and it's sold in England? Is it necessary to append this?

What's with the 1.6 GHz, and if you want 1.73, it's 400 £ more!!!! They just gouge and gouge again!

Why would the most retarded computer user in the universe need more than the one he can't cope with?

My last "new" comnputer was a self-assembled A7N8X-based system back in ... err... 2001? Was still going strong up until I posted this, then started rather odd behaviour : triggering scanner unprompted, booting on power-up without power key being pressed, claiming no keyboard at start-up, Ethernet connection died... Hallowe'en or coincidence?

I do not wish to know that.

Possibly, when one appears on the used market. At the moment I think the most powerful computer in this house is my Nokia E71.

Being a witty, pointless, sarcastic, obtuse, irrelevant, and obnoxious t*at on a web forum takes little computational power, so in your case, an E71 is lets face it, all you probably need.

Putting that aside, yes, for a do nothing gob off like you, I am sure your E71 is all you need. However, other people may have different dynamics.

1. Well, I need a new desktop x86 for games. Say quad core 2.8 GHz.

2. I need a netbook, and as there isn't an Amiga coming any time soon, an Atom or ARM one is what I have to get.

3. A NatAmi is urgently needed.

4. And of course a POWERHOUSE new PPC Amiga (_nothing wrong_ with the AmigaOne XE 800 MHz I have right now. It's just that I also want a new faster one as well). The MAP will do, I'm certain. Unless it's a phone (which I'll get), in which case I still want a more powerful Amiga NG.

5. One more that I dont want to mention specifically, but it's another Amiga.

Nicely said, sir; thanks for the laugh.

Well, sort of, but probably not in the way you mean it; there appeared to be a good reason for concentrating on mobile power over desktop - perhaps we will see if that was sound.

Electronics have never been so cheap, especially compared to everything else. The average family could buy a moderately sized LCD TV, middle-end laptop or netbook, or smartphone every month if they decided not to buy food and ordinary groceries and starve for a few weeks. What is it you are actually gaining by going for the used computers, unless someone is handing them to you for free? And it has to end up in landfill anyway, no matter what; if you were environmentally conscious it would be better not to use a computer at all, especially an old energy-sucking desktop with no doubt a CRT screen connected to it.
