According to the FBI, Mathias Ortmann apparently was the CTO and co-founder of a piracy exploiting gang led by well-known con artist Kim Schmitz (also known as "Kim Dotcom" and "Kimble"). Mathias Ortmann is said to have received 9 million dollars in 2010 alone in profits from Megaupload.com. He was arrested this week in Auckland, New Zealand, at the request of US officials.

Shame that Mega upload is gone, I'd stashed no end of files on there for disaster recovery purposes. Was also handy for grabbing Android firmware images too. As for "piracy exploiting gang", I'll wait and see what the trip brings out before rushing to vilify anyone.

The premise was "according to the FBI", with link to the source document. What is your problem with that?

"From the onset of the Conspiracy through to the present, ORTMANN has overseen software programmers that developed the Mega Conspiracy’s websites, and has handled technical issues with the ISPs. His particular areas of responsibility include setting up new servers, sending and responding to equipment service requests, and problem solving connectivity problems with the Mega Conspiracy websites."

I still remember scuz from early irc days.. and kimble, too. Although kimble never managed to stay long on a channel, before he got kicked. Never understood, how anybody ever did not notice, how stupid he was.

The problem is that I have this silly, old fashioned belief that a person is innocent until proven guilty. Yes, the indictment looks pretty damning, but then they're supposed to look that way.

But until it goes to trial, all this is speculation on our parts and will almost certainly be one sided due to the nature of our media.

We all share this belief I hope. But the quoted text didn't say that he was guilty. It said "According to the FBI". Do you have a problem with quoting the FBI?

And why store important personal data on a "piracy" (file _sharing_) site like Megaupload, instead of doing like honest people do and use something like Dropbox?

In of itself no, but at the same time the authorities have come out hard trying to prejudice public opinion against these people by releasing all manner of information about their spending and personal lives.

> And why store important personal data on a "piracy" (file _sharing_) site

Didn't say it was important or personal. In this case it was an offsite backup of some rather large documents as well as a couple of hard to find programs that were no longer for sale that I'd previously purchased. Disks degrade, CDs scratch but having a place I could quickly get that stuff back was useful.

Firstly I object to the implication of dishonesty. I use box.net for more private docs, but that comes with a 10mb filesize limit. Some of the manuals were quite a bit bigger than that.

In his eyes anyone and everyone using Megaupload is dishonest. I believe the term is poisoning the well.

Strawman anyone?

Anyone who thought X is a reliable and trustworthy place to archive Y information is a fucking moron*

(* Multiple backups at multiple locations using heavy duty encryption with the same, secure key is the only "safe" way)

How is this a straw man argument? Megaupload was a warez trading post founded and run by a well known criminal/scam artist. I'll reiterate. Anyone who thinks that their data is in good hands on a warez trading post run by a convicted criminal is a fucking moron. That's not a straw man argument, it's common sense.

As Dropbox is in the USA it means all the data on it is managed by the NSA. Using it for company or sensitive personal matter is asking to be hurt.

One funny thing, he started his career as "Hacker" with a BBS/Mailbox system. Paying users could download software. He used Amigas for his BBS. His systems ran on Amigas equipped with custom made multi ISDN cards.

My thinking in a nutshell. Backup early, backup often, backup multiple.

Encryption manditory. Just ffs don't forget the password/where you stored your encryption keys...

As no-one have claimed that storing important data there is a good idea: yes, this is exactly what a strawman argument is all about!

Relying on a server that belongs to somebody else and is situated who-knows-where is a bad idea.

The new Millenniata archival DVDs look promising.

I wouldn't say it is mandatory. None of the stuff I need to archive is confidential. The great bulk is photographs.

Business data certainly should be encrypted.

living in a fairly rough area, I've gotten into the habit of encrypting everything unless its something I intend to immediately share with someone else, its fast and trivial once you've set it up. On megaupload it also meant that even should someone stumble onto my stash, they'd not be able do do anything with it.

As I said, anything truly important got put elsewhere.
