done it. OSX is a lot nicer with 1GB under the hood! i'm not quite sure about this pastespreader business. i just used the blade of a pocket knife and that worked just fine. i even managed to get the memory in and out without further dissasembly, other than removing the case.

Well, the Official Apple tool is a putty knife with one edge ground down to make it like a blunt thin chisel. They're just off the shelf ones too, the ones I used still had the original manufacturers stickers on them, this makes me think Apple must be employing someone to modify them.

metal? i got a plastic one and maybe that was my mistake. it was kinda wide also. i can see that might leave the bottom of the case looking nicer, as i've got a few gouge-marks now from the knife.
