Mac substitutes for AMOS, Blitz, CanDo!

I found this news today on IMG:

Basically it's a highly featured 2D sprite engine for RealBASIC using OpenGL. It looks powerful, and it also brings back a flood of memories for me. First it reminds me of the various "game BASIC" languages for Atari ST and Amiga, ranging from STOS and AMOS to Blitz Basic. But I can go even further back. . . The first product of this type I ever saw was the PM Animator for Atari BASIC, which provided machine-language instructions for better accessing the Atari 800's sprite hardware. That would have been around. . . 1982, I think. We've come a long way since then.

It almost makes me tempted to get back into BASIC.

Here's the other interesting thing I stumbled across:

Runtime Revolution is an authoring system similar in principle to CanDo. A lot of details are different, of course, but when going through the first tutorial I was struck more by the similarities: the verbose (some would say flabby) English-like scripting language that vaguely resembles ARexx but isn't, the way the user interface is "drawn" by adding GUI objects, then attaching scripts (or methods) to them, etc. Same idea, same strengths and weaknesses. Unlike CanDo, this environment is cross-platform.

2
macromedia flash and director work the same way. asymetrix toolbook (win only) works in similar ways.

3
this message board has a fine design and a nicely disturbing tagline.
